The Exposure Myth: Why “Just Get Seen” Isn’t a Recruiting Strategy

The most repeated advice in youth sports is also the most misleading: *"You just need exposure. Get in front of coaches and the rest takes care of itself."* Families spend thousands chasing that promise — entry fees, travel, the premium showcase circuit — on the belief that being present equals being recruited.

It doesn't. Exposure is real, but "just get seen" is not a strategy, and treating it like one is how families burn budget without moving the needle.

What "exposure" actually means to a coach

College coaches don't wander tournaments hoping to discover someone. They show up to specific events with a list — players they already know about, want to confirm, or were told to watch. Their time and travel budgets are limited, so they attend the events that match their recruiting level and need, and they watch the players they planned to watch.

That means two things. First, the event matters far less than whether the right coach is there for your level. A massive showcase full of D1 staff does nothing for a player whose realistic level is D3 or NAIA. Second — and this is the part nobody sells you — getting on the list is the actual job. Showing up is necessary but nowhere near sufficient.

Why the big events underdeliver for most families

A few marquee events genuinely draw the coaches who recruit a given level. The problem is that the entire industry is priced and marketed as if every event is one of those. Most aren't. For the majority of families — especially those outside major metro areas — the cost of chasing "exposure" across the calendar dwarfs the actual recruiting value returned.

And there's a quieter failure: a player can perform brilliantly at an event and still go unrecruited because no coach in the stands was there for them, and nobody told a coach to look. Exposure without targeting is a coin flip you paid full price to enter.

What works instead: targeted visibility

Recruiting visibility is something you engineer, not something you buy a ticket to. The pieces:

  • Know your real level before you spend, so you target events and programs that actually fit. (Our how college coaches find recruits breakdown covers this.)
  • Get on the list before the event — email the coaches who'll be there, tell them when and where you play, and give them a reason to watch.
  • Be instantly verifiable — a coach who gets your message should be able to open one link and see your position, class year, film, and academics in seconds.
  • Follow up after — the event is the middle of the conversation, not the start.

That's targeted visibility, and it works from any zip code because it doesn't depend on out-spending everyone on travel.

The takeaway

Stop paying for presence and start engineering attention. A great event with the right coach, who already knows to watch you, who can verify you in one click, is worth more than ten showcases you attended anonymously. Athlete Intelligence is built to make that the default: a coach-ready profile, a plan that tells you which events matter for your level, and the outreach to get on the list before you ever travel. Start with a free profile and build visibility you actually control — or see how the whole year should flow in our recruiting timeline by grade.

Frequently asked questions

Are college showcases worth the money?

Only when the coaches who recruit your specific level are there AND they already know to watch you. A few marquee events qualify; most don't justify the cost on their own. Targeting and pre-event outreach matter more than attendance.

Do college coaches really recruit from tournaments?

Yes, but they attend with a list of players they already plan to watch. Getting on that list — through research and direct outreach before the event — is the real work. Simply showing up rarely gets a player noticed.
